Hi
Iam trying to learn as much as I can Before next spring. Can anyone suggest the best reading For theory. Particularly a dictionary Of terminology would help, and a guide to rigging Cheers John |

Rigging guides will vary boat to boat, but for the basics, the RYA start sailing book is good. It's designed to give the basic information you get on RYA start sailing courses.
Furnhurst books are good, too. My favorite for racing when young was Start to Win, by Eric Twiname, but you'd need some sailing before that. In fact, they all make more sense when combined with a boat! |

Hi,
For general boat layout the RYA booklet is really good. It doesn't have all the possible names and theory, but it's a good primer to understand the basics of rigging, boat equipment and nautical terms. My wife bought me a copy of "Float your boat" by Mark Denny. Goes into history plus theory of sailing far in excess of the RYA syllabus. Craig Osbourn is a good book as well - though the illustrations show a number of dinghy classes that are now rare! Colin

I'm old enough to prefer reading to watching video's, at least as far as learning new stuff is concerned, but there's no denying that watching somebody demonstrate something is a great learning tool. I just wish the makers of many YouTube videos would get to the point more quickly...
