A statement issued by scientists at Colorado State University predicts there will be at least 19 named storms and nine hurricanes — four of which will be Category 3 or higher.

Another above-average hurricane season is forecast for 2022. Normally, an average season will see about 14 named storms. The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on the 1st of June 2022 and ends on the 30th of November 2022. These dates historically describe the period in each year when most subtropical or tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic Ocean (> 97%). The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) will begin issuing regular Tropical Weather Outlooks on the 15th of May 2022, two weeks prior to the start of the season.

The busier-than-average predicted season continues a trend that scientists have been documenting for some time. Last season, CSU scientists predicted 17 named storms and four major hurricanes. It turned out to be the third most active season on record, with 21 named storms. There were seven hurricanes last season — four of which were considered major.

As global sea-surface temperatures rise due to climate change, hurricanes are likelier to be larger and more powerful as they form over warmer ocean waters.
