Setting Sail for Inclusion: First sailability fundraiser unites sailors of all abilities

by Trish Jenkins - J2 Communications 23 Feb 17:14 UTC

The inaugural Sailability Fundraiser (supported by the Royal Ocean Racing Club - RORC) at the National Sailing Academy (NSA) was a resounding success, featuring five teams racing in RS Venture Connects - small boats with adaptive sailing systems that level the playing field for disabled sailors. This event showcased the true spirit of inclusivity in sailing.

Under the guidance of Senior Instructor and Race Officer Xavier Athill, the racing conditions were nothing short of perfect. After five exciting races, Team 42 clinched the top spot, followed by the RORC Team in second and Team Blueprint in third.

Event creator Luke Spink (who is competing in the RORC Caribbean 600) was thrilled with the outcome, stating, "We loved it! Everyone appreciated the hospitality and learned about accessibility in sailing. I hope this starts something special; it's a great cause everyone should know about!" Luke, a lifelong sailor who became paralyzed after an accident four years ago, is passionate about promoting the opportunities sailing offers to all abilities.

The Sailability Programme at the NSA

Thanks go to Falmouth Ocean Club for their safety support, Luke Spink for bringing this concept to life, the Royal Ocean Racing Club for accommodating the event on their busy schedule, and the NSA team. All funds raised will go directly to the Sailability Programme.

For those who missed it but wish to contribute, donations can be made online or by contacting the Academy directly: nationalsailingacademy.org/payments
