The Seven Seas Cruising Association (SSCA) joins the worldwide cruising community in mourning the passing of renowned sailor, author, mentor, and friend Bruce Van Sant.

Bruce was best known as the author of Passages South: The Thornless Path to Windward, a guidebook that became the trusted companion of generations of sailors making their way from the United States to the Eastern Caribbean. For countless cruisers, Passages South was more than a guidebook—it was a passage-making strategy, a source of confidence, and often the difference between a difficult voyage and a successful one.

What set Bruce apart was not simply his knowledge of weather, currents, and routing. It was his unwavering devotion to helping fellow sailors. He spent decades sharing hard-earned wisdom, answering questions, encouraging newcomers, and helping cruisers safely reach their destinations. His work reflected a deep commitment to the cruising community and a genuine desire to see others succeed.

Bruce's understanding of the "Thorny Path" became legendary. Through careful observation, practical experience, and an exceptional ability to explain complex sailing conditions in understandable terms, he helped transform how sailors approached the voyage to the Caribbean.

Beyond his published work, Bruce was known for his generosity, kindness, humor, and willingness to assist anyone seeking advice. His influence extended far beyond the pages of his books. Thousands of sailors who never met him personally nevertheless benefited from his guidance and considered him a trusted companion on their voyages.

Bruce leaves behind an enduring legacy in the cruising world. His teachings continue to guide sailors across the Gulf Stream, through the Bahamas, and onward to the islands he loved. Future generations of cruisers will continue to learn from his work and benefit from the wisdom he so generously shared.

The SSCA extends its deepest condolences to his wife Rosa, his family, and his many friends around the world.

Fair winds and following seas, Bruce.

Your charts are folded, your watch is complete, and your wake will remain visible for many years to come.
