Cardiff Bay Yacht Club hosted youth and junior sailors from across South Wales for the latest round of the Dragon Series. The event was scheduled to have taken place on Saturday 6th June 2026 but in response to a high wind forecast was postponed to the Sunday.

Nineteen young sailors were still able to make it and enjoyed a fun and competitive day of racing for all abilities from rookies to experienced racers.

Six races were completed for all fleets, with coach support for the Training Handicap Fleet, Silver Handicap Fleets for sailors honing their experience and hoping to gain places in Welsh national squads, and Gold Handicap Fleets for top level sailors.

A breezy morning gave way to lighter wind conditions in the afternoon, with shifty conditions making for tricky racing and a chance to put boat handling to the test.

Sam Thomas, Chief Instructor at Cardiff Bay YC, said: "Despite the amount of rain we'd had all week it managed to stay dry all day, and it was really pleasing to see the sailors who retired from the breezier morning races, get out on the water again for all of the afternoon races.

"Well done to all the competitors and prize winners for making the most of the day, and thank you to all the parents and volunteers. It's always great to host the Dragon Series!"

The winners of each fleet were:

  • General Handicap - Gold Fleet - Alexa Atkins (ILCA 6)
  • General Handicap - Silver Fleet - Jack Harding (ILCA 4)
  • Junior Handicap - Gold Fleet - Martha Hughes (Optimist)
  • Junior Handicap - Silver Fleet - Freddie Faulkner-Clegg (Topper)
  • Training Handicap Fleet - Carys Harding (Optimist)

Next stop for the Dragon Series is a visit to Tenby Sailing Club in West Wales on Sunday 28th June 2026, which includes an optional training day on the Saturday for anyone wanting to make a weekend of it - enter here.

The youth and junior traveller series then continues across a variety of venues through July and August, leading up to the Welsh Sailing OnBoard Festival at Bala Sailing Club over the weekend of 22nd-23rd August 2026.
