Solo open meeting at West Oxfordshire Sailing Club

by Andrew Turberfield 30 Jun 20:36 UTC 27 June 2026

The West Oxfordshire Sailing Club Solo open meeting was held on 27th June with seven travellers and, disappointingly, only two home competitors.

The sun was hot, the wind was light and conditions were fluky. Large wind shifts caused some consternation among the visitors (locals are never surprised by what the wind does at WOSC).

The (average) wind direction allowed Ross Lonsdale, Race Officer, to set long beats and to use the whole of the lake.

Two back-to-back races were held before lunch and two after, with three to count.

Racing was generally close - especially in the last race when the wind, filling in from behind, brought the whole fleet together at the last mark.

Ian Matthews, on behalf of the visitors, thanked Ross for a good day's racing and made special mention of the catering - bacon rolls for breakfast and tacos for lunch - and of the patrol boat crew who had cheerfully endured unrelenting sun all day.
