Governor's Cup Day 4: Hyde, Hayhoe, Nichols, Pinckney Advance to the Semis

The last two races of the double round-robin stage — where each team races against the others twice — were completed on Friday at the 59th Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship.
The top four scoring teams in the Round Robins advanced to the head-to-head first-to-win-three Semi-Finals.
Josh Hyde (NZL, Royal New Zealand YS) maintained his lead from Day 5 and was the top scorer in the Round Robin stage. It was much more interesting, however, for the remaining spots. When the day started, Hyde had 15 points, while James Hayhoe (AUS, Royal Sydney YS) and Sam Scott (NZL, Royal New Zealand YS) were tied at 13 points for second place. There were three teams tied at 12 points for third. It was expected that one of those three would advance to the Semi-Finals along with Hyde, Hayhoe and Scott.
The three tied teams were local favorite Siena Nichols (USA) from host Balboa YC, Christian Prendergast (USA, Chicago YC) and Daniel Kemp (AUS, Royal Prince Alfred YS).
Last evening, World Youth Match Racing Champion Morgan Pinckney (USA, Newport Harbor YC) looked at the scoreboard and, with only 11 points, said, "I'm out of it." Two-time GovCup winner Andy Rose begged to differ, and proved correct.
Today, Pinckney won both his matches and was suddenly back in contention. The teams that were tied at 12, along with Scott, who was on 13 wins, did not have a good day. So, Pinckney moved into a tie for the fourth and final position and won on the tiebreak.
Under the rules, the winner of the Round Robin stage chooses their opponent from among the other three Semi-finalists. Hyde chose the third-place team, Siena Nichols. That left Hayhoe and Pinckney racing in the other Semi-Final.
The Governor's Cup, presented by Terry Causey and the Call of the Sea Foundation, is the oldest and most prestigious youth match racing championship in the world. It includes among its "alumni" many of the finest sailors in the world today, led by two-time America's Cup winner James Spithill (AUS). This year, all three finalists for the prestigious U.S. Rolex Yachtsman of the Year — Justin Callahan, Taylor Canfield and Paul Cayard — have competed in the GovCup. Most recently, Cole Tapper (AUS), who won his second GovCup last year, went on to win the Congressional Cup, one of the premier events on the World Match Racing Tour, sailed primarily by professionals with no age limit.
GovCup TV will provide live coverage of the championship racing on Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. PDT (1830 UTC). Following the conclusion of racing, the Finalists' Press Conference will be broadcast live beginning at 5:00 p.m. PDT (0000 UTC +1), with the Governor's Cup Awards Ceremony immediately following.
