Governor's Cup Overall: Pinckney wins the "Triple Crown" of Youth Match Racing

Morgan Pinckney (USA, Newport Harbor YC) won his first Governor's Cup after four previous tries, and in dominant fashion, defeating Siena Nichols (USA) from host Balboa YC, 3-0.
Both Pinckney and Nichols overcame multiple setbacks during the week of racing, with Nichols coming back from a 0-2 score in her Semifinal with Josh Hyde (NZL, Royal New Zealand YS) to win 3-2. Hyde was either leader or co-leader every night this week, and won the double Rounds Robin with a score of 17 wins.
With two races to go in the Rounds Robin, Pinckney was in 7th place. He won his last two Rounds Robin matches. A combination of those wins and key losses by others, he ended up tied for fourth and won the tie-break.
Josh Hyde chose third-place finisher Siena Nichols as his opponent in the Semi-finals, leaving Pinckney to race Hayhoe in the other Semi. After being down 0-2, 17-year-old Nichols came back to defeat the veteran Hyde 3-2. Pinckney had an easier time in his Semi, topping Hayhoe 3-1.
Coming back from a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 in any sport is rare and exceedingly difficult. But Nichols and her crew of Maddie Nichols, Eddie Kliem, and Kai Brennan pulled it off brilliantly and to the surprise of many.
That set up an all Newport Beach final which most observers believe has never happened in the modern era (since 1989 when teams from outside the USA have been invited).
In the finals, the racing was amazingly close, with lead changes in several races. However, at 21 years old and the newly crowned Youth World Match Racing Champion, Pinckney and his crew of Sabrina Anderson, Cam Spriggs, and Kelly Holthus prevailed 3-0.
To sum up Pinckney's performance during the week, he won every race he needed to win. He is only the second person to win the "Triple Crown" of U.S. youth match racing: the Rose Cup, the Worlds, and the Governor's Cup.
Balboa YC's Jeffrey Petersen (USA) was the first to win the "Triple Crown." Today he was serving on the GovCup TV commentary team and said, "Morgan came from deep and managed to win the GovCup with sheer determination and great poise."
This was the 59th edition of the BYC Governor's Cup, the oldest and most prestigious international youth match racing championship.
The Governor's Cup, presented by Terry Causey and the Call of the Sea Foundation, is the oldest and most prestigious youth match racing championship in the world. It includes among its "alumni" many of the finest sailors in the world today, led by two-time America's Cup winner James Spithill (AUS). This year, all three finalists for the prestigious U.S. Rolex Yachtsman of the Year — Justin Callahan, Taylor Canfield and Paul Cayard — have competed in the GovCup. Most recently, Cole Tapper (AUS), who won his second GovCup last year, went on to win the Congressional Cup, one of the premier events on the World Match Racing Tour, sailed primarily by professionals with no age limit.
