Doyle Sails NZ awards inaugural Junior Scholarship Prizes at 2014 Optimist National Championships

The team at Doyle Sails NZ are always looking to support up and coming talent in New Zealand’s young sailors and in line with this have recently launched a new Junior Scholarship Programme. The inaugural scholarships were presented at the recent 2014 Optimist National Championships.

Up for grabs at the event were four spots on the scholarship scheme, to be awarded to the Top Placed Auckland-based Green Fleet sailor, and to the Top Three Placed Auckland-based 13/14 year old sailors in the Open Fleet. Benefits of the scholarship include planning time and coaching sessions with Doyle’s One Design Manager Andrew Brown, time out at the Doyle loft and Stratis plant, lots of Doyle gear, a sail on the Stratis SL33 Foiling Cat with Mike Sanderson and much more.

Winner of the Green Fleet scholarship was Blake McGlashan of Murray’s Bay Sailing Club who took the overall win and the Sail One Easter Trophy. “I am really looking forward to receiving my scholarship prize and I'm looking forward to sailing next season with Doyle’s help!” said Blake, pictured below with his certificate.

The Open Fleet Scholarships went to Scott McKenzie, Kohi Yacht Club, Lewis Anderson, Kohi Yacht Club, and Jackson Keon, Murray’s Bay Sailing Club. With a large fleet taking part and a high standard of racing throughout, these wins were a real credit to the dedication and talent of these four young sailors.

“Doyle Sails NZ was really proud to be supporting the Optimist class at the New Zealand Nationals in both the green fleet and open fleet. Through their scholarships we are looking forward to helping these four young stars achieve their future sailing goals," says Andrew Brown. "Blake sailed a fantastic regatta in the Green Fleet. Not only were Scott, Lewis and Jackson the top 13 and 14 year olds in the Open Fleet, Scott won the regatta overall, Lewis achieved 4th overall and Jackson 5th overall. It was a great result for them all."

Congratulations to the scholarship winners and to all the participants in the 2014 Optimist National Championships.
