It’s been another great year for our One Design Classes with our sails leading the way in many classes. Following is a breakdown.
 

Optimist 

Congratulations to Seb Menzies from Murrays Bay, He has just qualified for the New Zealand World’s Team using his new design MZX4. He is off to Portugal in June and we wish him all the best.

Also a great result by Josh Gilmore and Joshua Hyde who are going to the Europeans, George Lee Rush to North American’s and Luke Cashmore is off to Sri Lanka for the Asian’s. They are going very well internationally with new range MZX4 and 5 also the popular Japan P4, and P5 which is now replaced with R1, R2 and R3 to suit all sailors and conditions.

Hamish Hall Smith dominated this year’s Nationals which were held in the Bay of Islands. Great to see a youth sailor taking out the event. We are lucky to have Derek Scott’s experience in this class which has been a big part in sail development.

OK Dinghy

Luke “Colt “O’Connell narrowly won the Nationals held in Napier from Dan Slater. Slater then went onto to win the Interdominions held off Manly Beach. This class has had a massive resurgence in which Daniel Bush has been working hard developing sails. It is also exciting to see new boats getting built for the fleet as they aim towards the world championships coming to Auckland in 2019.

Finn

The Finn Gold Cup was held off Takapuna which saw Andrew Murdoch have a great regatta to claim 4th.

Paper Tiger

We have recently begun making sails for this class with instant success, working closely with Mark Orams launching the new Stealth design which Marko used to win the Nationals and Interdoms. This product is lighter than the previous Dacron sail but still easy to use with PT rigs.

Paul Snow- Hansen and Dan Wilcox won the Nationals from Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie. Both teams have qualified for the Olympics which we will all be watching closely. Their Sails like the 420 are made by North Sails Japan that do a great job always developing custom sails.

18 foot Skiffs 

The Kiwi Team Yamaha were on fire this year in Sydney for the JJ Giltinans  – Dave Mcdiarmid, Matt Stevens (NSNZ Employee) and Brad Collins finished 2nd place which is the best place a Kiwi team has had for many years. Other Kiwi teams showed  moments of brilliance on the World stage demonstrating our fast Sails. Next up they have the Anzac regatta then they are off to Fiji in July.

Elliott 5.9 Nationals 

This year’s Nationals were held in the beautiful waters off Omaha. Craig Satterthwaite, Richard Bearda and Carl Evans took out this year’s event with a full North Inventory. This is also a class that has really had a resurgence which is great to see.

Etchells Nationals 

Andrew Wills (NSNZ Sales Manager), Anatole Masfen and Matt Kelway (NSNZ) dominated this year’s Nationals with Craig Greenwood 2nd and Phil Pryde 3rd. The Etchells fleet has always been strong in New Zealand but are really growing and a highly competitive fleet with close racing. North Sails continue to do well in this class after securing all of the top 10 boats at the recent World Championships.

Young 88 Nationals 

Once again we had top results in the Open Nationals with the majority of races won by boats using our sails.  Ed Massey finished 3rd and won Handicap.  Waka Huia used our new Radian main and 3Di genoa and had speed to burn.  Bill and the Waka team have been class stalwarts and really epitomise the class spirit.  Seasoned campaigner, Zane Gifford won the owner/driver Nationals.

Harley 16 

We have been working hard developing sails with Jason and Wayne Holt over the last two years which is proving to be worthwhile. They have both had top results in regional regattas and Nationals as they prepare for next season.
