Australian Olympic sailor Melanie Dennison well place in Yngling Worlds

Australian Olympic sailor Melanie Dennison and her crew from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron are the sixth placed women’s crew after the
first three races of the world championship for the International Yngling keelboat class being sailed off Newport, Rhode Island, USA.
This the first world championship since the Yngling was named as the women’s keelboat class for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games with 21
all-women crews in the total fleet of 44 contesting this open series.
Dennison, who sailed in the single-handed Europe dinghy class at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, won race three of the championship, her
other placings of 15, 29 and 6 giving her a total of 67.7 points to be 11th overall and sixth woman skipper.
American woman Helen Swett is overall leader with a score of 10-4-6-1 on 35.7 points, just one point ahead of Denmark’s M. Christensen.
Of the other Australians competing Chris Meehan is 12th overall, Hamish Stone 15th, Karyn Gojnich 23rd, Hamish Jarrett 27th, Chris Harper
30th, Heather McFarlane from Melbourne 34th and Patricia Warn 35th.
In Denmark, Danish and German sailors are dominating the overall standings in the 2001 International Dragon world championship, the best
placed Australian skipper being Ian MacDiarmid who is 26th after four races, while Carl Ryves is 30th and Matthew Whitnall is 50th in the fleet of
76.
