Laser SB3 - Simonds wins but Carveth Leads

by Clare Molloy on 7 Aug 2007
A non-racing yacht sails through the Laser SB3 fleet competing at Skandia Cowes Week onEdition http://www.onEdition.com

Looking at the conditions this morning the Laser SB3 fleet were expecting another tacking match off the start line heading west up the Gurnard shore. At 10.05 am, however, spectators at Cowes Royal Yacht Squadron enjoyed the sight of over 90 VW Touareg kites being hoisted on the line as the fleet headed east on a 4-mile run towards Portsmouth.

It was a good clean start with only two boats over, Musto and eshopfittings.com, who both went back through the line. Glenn Bourke in Musto went on to make an amazing recovery to finish second. Colin Simmons also sailed a binding race to finish in first place and Geoff Carveth, who was way back on the start line, came through the fleet to finish sixth.

Today was a game of nerve choosing when to cross the tide with boats side by side going from 16th to 60th on the first beat. Helms found it unnerving as the fleet split time and time again with no one certain of how their decision would turn out. Places were changing constantly throughout the race, with boats fighting to get stay in the shallows and out of the tide.

Shore-side, many enjoyed the sunshine and entertainment post-race as Jez Entwistle, (Ship For Brains) won the Tow a Touareg Competition heat at Shepherds Wharf. Your faithful reporter, Clare Molloy (PwC) also gave it a go, managing to pull the enormous machine the length of the wharf. Both will now compete in the final on Friday.
