Welcome to the Doyle Sails October 2010 Newsletter
It
has been nearly three months now since Doyle Sails Australia's Sydney
operations were expanded with financial and technical support from Doyle
Sails New Zealand. The development provides all of the Australian lofts
with access to Doyle NZ's resources including the state of the art
Stratis plant, one of the leading sail design teams in the world and a
team of high performance sailors. For Sydney the expansion resulted in
a move back into the Rushcutters Bay loft and a push on the marketing
side.
We
are pleased to report that the expansion has been a success enabling us
to provide better service to our existing customers and getting more
Doyle sails out on the harbour. We are continuing with this expansion,
and on the lookout for more staff that will enable us to give you even
more support on and off the water.
ARE YOUR SAILS A PRODUCT OF THE FACEBOOK GENERATION OR THE FLINSTONES GENERATION?
Does
your sailmaker cut fabric from a generic roll of cloth and stitch it
together to make your sail in the time honoured way that sailmakers have
been doing for thousands of years; or is your sail custom designed with
each yarn carefully laid out in the precise place it needs to be to
address the loads on the sail, and then laminated under heat and extreme
pressure to produce a state of the art laminated membrane?
While there is still a place for panel structured sails built in the
traditional way, for the last decade Doyle Sails has been at the
forefront in the development of advanced sail manufacturing techniques.
We have invested heavily in the research and development of materials
and techniques as well as investing in our state of the art
manufacturing facility in Auckland.
The benefits of this development can now be shared by sailors on all
types of sailing yachts from sports boats to dhows, grand prix racers to
superyachts and leisurely cruising boats to club racers.

which will culminate in the Barcelona Round the World Race starting 1st

DOYLE SAILS SYDNEY AND THE PERFECT SALE
As
part of our expansion we offered our “Perfect Sale” 20% discount at the
Sydney International Boat Show. We had a large uptake at the show, and
because of the scale of interest, a lot of the quotes went out after the
show and were subsequently turned into sails (excuse the pun). As well
as discounts on sails, we were also offering discounts on our
other products: Bamar furlers and Leisure Furl in-boom furling systems.
BIG BOATS AT HAMO 2010
Doyle Sails were well represented at the
big end of town with Kokomo (58m) taking first place and Perseus (50m)
second in the superyacht division. Both yachts were sailing with
complete sets of Doyle sails. Kokomo's made good use of their gennaker,
which at 2,227 square metres is believed to be the largest sail ever
built for a yacht.
HOLD THE SUSHI
Doyle
Sails Sydney’s John Hearne was recently in China to compete in the
Mayor's Cup as part of Qingdao International Sailing Week. Teams from
Australia, France, Japan, Russia and China competed in identical
Beneteau First 40's, all equipped with a complete wardrobe of Doyle
sails.
Conditions at the regatta were described as tricky at best with periods
of light and flukey winds and multiple obstacles in the water included
fishing nets and fish farms. We hear that one team, which included a
certain Sydney sail cloth manufacturer, by no fault of their own were
caught up in submerged fishing nets and winched almost on to the deck of
a fishing trawler. Fortunately they did not have to use the lifejackets
that they had donned, but it did ruin their day.
HEAD DESIGNER RICHARD BOUZAID TURNS HIS HAND TO WRITING
Look
out for Richard Bouzaid’s regular column in Sails Magazine, the
recently launched publication from Ocean Media covering the sailing
scene in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia.
In
the column Doyle Sails’ head of design looks at what is happening on
the international racing scene and discusses his involvement and
experiences as a crew member and coach with various top flight teams
around the world.

PETER MCNEILL WINS IRISH ETCHELLS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations
to Doyle Sails Lake Macquarie's Peter McNeill for winning the 2010
Irish National Etchells Championships in August.
LOCAL LEGEND COL ANDERSON REPORTS FROM DOYLE SAILS MELBOURNE...
We
had the first sail on David Ellis’s new Archambault 31 at the weekend.
David has again chosen a complete wardrobe of Doyle Stratis working
sails combined with Doyle downwind sails. Richard Bouzaid from our Doyle
New Zealand loft has done extensive 3D modelling for this project and
all the sails looked great straight out of the bag. The A31 is a great
boat, and combined with David's sailing talent, should be hard to beat
in IRC Division 2.
We also hoisted the new larger Doyle Stratis Mainsail on the Beneteau
45 Reverie on the weekend and achieved some very encouraging numbers.
Owner Alan Woodward is focused on regaining his Number 1 spot in the
Club Marine Series IRC Division 1 after finishing 2nd last season to the
Doyle powered Adams 10 Executive Decision. Alan is also returning to
Lincoln Race Week in the New Year after winning the IRC Division there 2
years ago. Not to be outdone, Executive decision owner Grant Botica is
adding a new Doyle Stratis Number 1 and Number 3 for this season.
Swordfish Trombone owners
Tim Olding and Martin Lavery have purchased a new Doyle Stratis
Mainsail to go with their Doyle Stratis headsails and Masthead
Spinnaker. Tim is hoping to improve on his 2nd in AMS Division 1, ORCV
Winter Series.
Farr 1020, Wavelength owner Brendan Kruger recently fitted his new
Doyle Stratis Mainsail, number 1 and 3 and is very pleased with the
results so far, including one race with a line honours,1st AMS and 1st
PHD.
Last year we made a new inshore Doyle Stratis Mainsail for the DK 46 Extesea which they used in the recent ORCV winter series to win IRC Division 1. Congratulations to Paul Buchholz and crew.
DOYLE SAILS OCEANIA GROUP
Doyle Sails has the largest network of
sail lofts in the Oceania region and arguably the largest sail loft in
the Southern Hemisphere with the Stratis plant
in Auckland. Representatives from each of the lofts met at a Doyle Sails
conference in mid September to ensure that we are all up to speed on
the latest in sail design, materials and detailing. Working together in
this way strengthens the group and gives our customers comfort in the
knowledge that they have a major brand behind them.
Doyle
Sails' commitment to continual innovation and the production of highest
quality sails will help you to enjoy your sailing experience. Whether
you want to be first around the track or safely anchored behind the reef
before dark, with Doyle sails onboard you can be confident that you
will get the results you expect.
Thank
you for taking the time to read this newsletter, if you have any
