Malts Cruise- sailing, scenery and single malt whisky

by World Cruising Club on 15 Jun 2011
Malts Cruise farewelled by piper SW
Up to 40 yachts taking part in World Cruising Club's Malts Cruise will be welcomed at Oban Marina on Scotland's west coast for two days on 8/9th July and to mark the start of this well-known annual event cruising Scotland.

In true cruising style, a buffet supper and ceilidh (traditional Gaelic social gathering which usually involves playing Gaelic folk music and dancing) will be held in the marina's 'Boatshed'. It is sure to be a memorable party, setting the tone for the remainder of the cruise. The start on Sunday 10th July will include a spectacular Parade of Sail as the fleet head off to their first stop in Tobermory.

Yachts then select their own route to the next rendezvous in Port Ellen, allowing exploration of the islands and secluded anchorages of the West Coast. The event, supported by Diageo's Classic Malts Selection, is not just about sailing though, as the Malts Cruise is a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional Scottish hospitality, local specialities like scallops and whisky, and to have a great time with fellow cruisers.

The Malts Cruise is a mix between cruising in company and arranged social activities, and informal exploring ashore and afloat:
The programme includes seminars and briefings on cruising on the west coast, including the wildlife and its history. There will be a bar supper in Tobermory and a distillery tour. Then there will be guided walking tours, a seminar on the fascinating history of the Isle of Mull, with a cruise buffet. How could you miss an Isle of Rum Tour at the Kinloch Castle with a guided walking to and in informal cruise barbecue? Then it's on to Lock Tarbert for an informal raft-up and pot-luck barbecue. Lagavulin puts on its own distillery tour, and then, finally it's Port Ellen with a Buffet supper and ceilidh.
