Cadet Second Indicator at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 1

by David Elliott 2 May 2010 09:57 UTC 1-2 May 2010

75 Cadets have entered this weekend’s Second Indicator at Torquay. Only one race was possible on Saturday. The fleet launched into a F4 westerly expecting to sail three back-to-back races, but there was barely sufficient wind to complete the final leg of the course.

The Gold and Silver fleets raced together and started on time, with the Bronze fleet following five minutes later. Will Reid & Ole Alcock (Parkstone) sailing 9576 rounded the windward in first place, followed by Max & Francesca Ingall (Fishers Green) in 8855, Joe Butterworth & Arthur Brown (Fishers Green/Royal Burnham) in 8910 and Abigail Croft & Alex Page (Frensham Pond/Fishers Green) in 8363. Matthew & Ben Shorrock (Frensham Pond) in 8352 held fifth place from James Dodd & Jessica D’Arcy (Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond) in sixth.

Abigail & Alex had taken the lead by the Gybe mark with Will & Ole second and by the Leeward mark had built up a 30 second margin over Max & Francesca, Joe & Arthur and Matthew & Ben. The top three were unchanged at the end of the first windward/leeward loop, but then the wind started to drop. At the end of the third beat, Abigail & Alex led from Max & Francesca with Edward Cummings & Katie Hinde (Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond) in 9028 third, Will Reid & Ole Alcock in 9576 fourth, Mary Henderson & Annie Sibthorp (Salcombe/Itchenor) in 7630 fifth and Ben Binmore & Martha Jones (Royal Torbay) in 8440 sixth.

The run to the finish was deadly slow. Abigail & Alex took the gun with a four minute lead over second placed Ben & Martha, who over the course of the final loop had picked up 17 places. Third place was taken by Max & Francesca with Matthew Currell & Theo Smith (Parkstone) in 8997 fourth, who had also significantly improved their position in the light and shifty wind. Louise Latham & Aaron Chadwick (Fishers Green) in 9635 finished fifth, Will Reid & Ole Alcock sixth, Edward Cummings & Katie Hinde seventh and Jack Wilson & Jim Brooker (Frensham Pond) in 735 eighth.

F5 gusting F6/7 NNE winds are forecast for today.
