Soto 40s at the 34th Copa del Rey MAPFRE - Day 2

by Soto40 Media 5 Aug 2015 20:10 UTC 3-8 August 2015

Noticia IV takes the lead

Another great day of racing in the Bay of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in which the six Soto 40 have given their best to deduct positions. The first positions of the general board are for Noticia IV with 7 points, Bigamist with 11 points, and Mitsubishi with 13.

After the first windward / leeward race of the day with winds of 11-15 knots, Noticia IV of Luis Martin Cabiedes, was already positioned in the first position of the board. This first test results are for Noticia IV, the second position for Mitsubishi and the third for UON. Remind that the winning boat of this regatta is defending the crown won in the 2013 Copa del Rey.

Glen Ellen 22 was the surprise in the second and last test of the day, reaching the finish line first and remaining fourth in the overall standings. Secondly arrived the Noticia VI after another great performance on the race course. The third one to cross the finish line was Koyama.

Pichu Torcida from Noticia IV told us: "The truth is that we have sailed very well. We had a great start plus two boats had an early entry, which left us almost a free race court. From there we only had to control the "Mitsubishi" who was coming second and pretty close. At the end of the second upwind we could escape a little and arrived in first place.

"In the second race we had a small problem at the start. We started a little late and since then we've been sailing forward and we reached the windward mark third. In the second leeward leg we managed to arrive second.

"In general the work is great, the crew is really close and united. So much to do and six races left to sail.

"It helps us knowing and having sail in this bay, but all boats has people who have done the same Copa del Rey as us. The fleet is really compact, sailing all together. At the moment we had few mistakes and that's what keeps us ahead.

"There is so much remaining for the next days and the strategy will be remain sailing focused."

The 34th Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organized by the Real Club Nautico de Palma and is held until Saturday, August 8th.
