The Scottish Fireball Fleet decided on a slightly different warm up for the Worlds in Devon, having already travelled to Ireland and Shetland this year – the final pre worlds event was the Scottish Fireball Championships at Chanonry Sailing Club, Fortrose, The Black Isle by Inverness.
So 6th & 7th August, approximately 622 miles North of Tiegnmouth the Scottish Fleet were taking to the water.
In the first race first to the windward mark won the race, with Ewan and Matt taking the first bullet. The Second race was won by Pete & Babbs with Donald and Ewan taking the third, meaning there was only 2 points between the first 3 boats at the end of Day 1. Racing behind these 3 was fierce with Colin and substuite crew Keith taking 3rd in the first race and Elspeth and Alan 3rd in the Second.
Day 2 and everything to sail for, post tuned Mike and Martin had a cracking first beat in the first race until the start was recalled, however their newly tuned rig didn’t quite manage to pull them ahead of John and Lucy.
Podium positions depended on the last race, Ewan and Matt where second at the windward behind Donald with Pete third, stayed that way until 3rd beat when the most of the fleet rounded the windward mark together with Ewan and Matt managing to come out ahead and maintain their lead to the finish.
With 6 Scottish boats heading for the worlds we are all hoping that our northern exposure will stand us in good stead –you can black flag us but you can never take our freedom ….
