In August, sailors began reporting a pumice raft the size of Manhattan drifting towards Australia, presumably caused by an eruption of an undersea volcano. It captured the attention of major media outlets and made headlines around the world.
Cruisers encountering the rafts, which have broken down into smaller clusters, have been asked to take samples and report the position of the rafts to .
The pink area on the map is the position of the rafts on the 9 September 2019. The Blue arrow indicates the predicted direction of travel at about 20 km/day.
