The Atlantic Hurricane season, Indian Ocean crossing season and Pacific cyclone season are all inching their way closer, causing much anxiety in the cruising community for those migrating yachts that are stuck in lockdown or unable to continue with planned passages due to country closures.

Key seasonal changes which cruisers need to prepare for, yet, a seemingly impossible task in the current health emergency.

Stephanie Colotti Ferrie sums up well the current cruising dilemma being felt worldwide.

To help with the planning process we have some excellent articles on Noonsite from industry experts and experienced cruisers:

  • Chris Parker of the Marine Weather Center discusses timing and routing considerations for vessels departing the Caribbean, seasonal forecasts, hurricane holes and risk minimization. See here.
  • Author Chris Doyle has useful suggestions on where to go in the Caribbean once hurricane season arrives. See here
  • Andy and Sue Warman in French Polynesia, Austin Baird in Guam and Kirk Patterson in Japan, all give their suggestions on route and destination options thinking ahead to the Pacific cyclone season in October/November. See here
  • Jason Trautz crossed the Indian Ocean in 10 months, from Thailand to South Africa. His suggestions from his own experience are a useful guide for those planning this passage. See here
  • While trying to work out the best option for your boat and crew during the current health emergency, yacht transport may be one option to consider. Worldwide Sailings from three transport companies can be found here
