We haven't been to the China Cup International Regatta these last couple of years, but this is where it all started: Longcheer Yacht Club on the east coast of the Dapeng peninsula, just across the water from the Daya Bay nuclear power station. We first visited in 1997, with the "Hong Kong - Shenzhen International Friendship Rally". (Cheoy Lee Offshore 36, Kali Mbwa; last on the water, first on handicap). Shortly after there came the Shenzhen Marine Sports Centre, and the Sevenstar Yacht Club, and Longcheer fell into a state of disrepair.
Now it's back: Cape Town-based architecture and design practice SAOTA has unveiled the design of the Longcheer Yacht Club in Shenzhen, China. Located on the Dapeng Peninsula, the flagship club and hotel serves as a catalyst to promote yachting culture and marine sports in the region.
The narrow footprint of the property hugs the coastline in a linear zigzag, and the façade is detailed with a modular pattern that emphasizes light and transparency with an undulating copper-toned visual effect. (That's what the architects say).
A series of four rooftop pavilions will host onsite entertainment and events, gently enveloping the outdoor spaces with lightweight, floating pavilions that echo the angularity of the building’s external ribbon. The structures conjure up a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Chinese architecture, which further highlights the strong axial elements and a clear hierarchy of design. Landscaped roof gardens contrast the linear architecture in harmony with flowing lines and softened edges.
Obviously, its a good deal more than just a yacht club!
