Tell President Biden: permanently protect our coasts from dangerous offshore drilling disasters

This past Tuesday marked 11 years since the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster - the worst ever oil spill in the history of the United States.

Oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico for months. The impact on our ocean, marine life and coastal communities was unprecedented and continues today. Ocean wildlife killed included:

  • up to 800,000 birds
  • up to 170,000 sea turtles
  • at least 150 dolphins and whales

While former President Trump put forth a radical plan to expand offshore drilling, President Biden recently took important ocean saving action to halt all new offshore oil and gas leasing during his first days in office.

This is a CRITICAL step forward in the fight against climate change, but it isn't enough. Tell President Biden to permanently protect our coasts from offshore drilling and oil spills.

Climate change is wreaking havoc here in the U.S., right now. Sea levels are rising, and destructive flooding is becoming more frequent and severe. Permanent protections against expanded offshore oil drilling are crucial to securing the future of our clean coast economy and addressing the climate crisis.

Dirty and dangerous offshore oil drilling exacerbates this climate crisis and poses an immediate threat to our oceans. We can fight back and safeguard our coastal economy by advancing clean energy and permanently protecting our coasts from offshore drilling.

We applaud President Biden's swift action to reposition the United States as a leader on climate action, and now we're encouraging him to secure these desperately needed protections for decades to come. You can help right now.

On this Earth Day, tell President Biden to permanently protect our coasts against dangerous offshore drilling — inviting new opportunities in clean energy for well-paying jobs and zero oil spill disasters.

Opposition to dirty and dangerous offshore oil drilling is widespread and bipartisan. And it's easy to see why. Permanent protections from new offshore drilling would protect our coasts from the dangers of oil spills and contribute to the fight against climate change, all while paving the way for good paying American jobs in clean, renewable energy, like offshore wind.

Over 2,300 elected officials from the local, state and federal level - Republicans and Democrats - have opposed or expressed concern with expanded offshore drilling and exploration. Permanently protecting our coasts could:

  • Prevent over 19 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions fueling climate change.
  • Prevent more than $720 billion in damage to people, property and the environment.
  • Protect the roughly 3.3 million American jobs and $250 billion in GDP through activities like tourism, recreation and fishing.

Our new president is leading the way in the fight against offshore drilling, but we desperately need your voice encouraging him to go the extra mile for our oceans and marine life. Together, we can fight for permanent protection against dirty and dangerous offshore drilling during a time of undeniable climate crisis. Nancy - are you with us?

Add your name right now to fight offshore oil drilling and climate change here...

On this Earth Day, I'm reminded that it's on us - you and me - to hold our elected leaders accountable for protecting our coasts by ensuring that no new drilling disasters can occur within our oceans. Not now, not ever.
