Earlier this week, the largest ever global analysis of coral reef health was released.
Data collected for the report spanned more than 40 years and consisted of almost two million observations from over 12,000 sites in 73 countries around the world.
The report shows approximately 14 per cent of the world's coral has been lost since 2009. However, the report also found many of the world's coral reefs remain resilient and can recover if conditions allow, providing hope for their long-term health if local pressures continue to be addressed and strong and fast action is taken to decrease global greenhouse gas emissions.
At the Reef Authority, we are working hard to build the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef so it can better withstand threats such as climate change, cyclones, and predation by crown-of-thorns starfish. Everyone can contribute to the health of the Reef and make a difference. Actions taken now will matter. We want people to think globally, act locally; every effort, no matter how small, matters.
