Four security reports this month highlight threats that affect all cruisers:

Being burgled while absent is all too common a story right now as many boat owners have been forced to leave their yachts for an extended period on foreign shores. Research what you can do to protect your boat while you are not on board.

Encountering pirates on passage is less common, however always be sure to carefully research security incidents in the area you are cruising so you can plan your route safely.

Fully consider the risks before traveling through a known problem area and if using "buddy boats" have firm, agreed plans in place for routing and regular communications as well as emergency communications and response plans for use before, during and after any perceived threat or event. The CSSN's Piracy Precaution pages contain useful suggestions for best practices when transiting through or near areas with a known history of piracy.

On shore is perhaps where we expect to be victims of petty theft at some point in our cruising life, but have you considered what you would do if you had your valuables and cell phone stolen? Always work through the worst-case-scenario, so you have an easy plan of action to follow when tensions are high.

Noonsite's Piracy and Security page has years of reports and links to useful resources to help you better prepare for an offshore adventure. All security reports posted on the site can be found here.
