Salcombe Yacht Club Cruisers all set for an action packed 2022!

by Lucy Burn 7 Feb 2022 10:03 UTC

It's been a busy week at SYC. Ben, our Bar Manager, has stripped, cleaned and re-painted the cellar making it look all new and shiny again. Chef Nick has got a new toy to play with, - an all singing and dancing deep fat fryer; and with his creative hat on, he's created a mouthwatering new menu and, introduced the first of our "Fish Fridays" - Two Cod or Scampi & Chips for £20!! Add the Six Nations Rugby to the mix and you've got all the ingredients for a successful start to February.

Our Cruiser programme is also all set for a successful 2022 - Programme here; 2022 Sailing Programme Revision 9.pdf and, one of the many benefits of becoming a SYC Member is that you can join any of the cruises taking place throughout the year.

Our Cruiser section, established to encourage Club events designed for cruising boats whether sail or motor, was created in 1977 although, records indicate some Salcombe Yachts were involved in port-to-port races from at least 1960 onwards.

Yachtsmen in Salcombe are well catered for at SYC with a busy cruising and racing schedule. At SYC, we welcome participation from both sailing and motor yachts, with a series of rallies held throughout the summer, usually involving 20-40-mile passages.

The Rally Leaders organise a 'pontoon drinks reception' followed by a meal at the local yacht club or one of the nearby restaurants. Each season we generally hold five of these short rallies and one longer one, which is often across the Channel or further down the West Country. Many yachts extend their cruising around these rallies with some of our members also exploring further afield, maybe hoping to be the winner of the Club trophy for the log showing the longest cruise in one season?!

A series of Sunday morning races, approx. six in total, are held out in the Range in Salcombe, and a couple of longer day races are arranged throughout the season, with awards for both IRC and NHC handicap winners. These fun races are run every year on a very friendly and informal basis, and all are made to feel welcome, whether seasoned competition sailors or newcomers to yacht racing and we are always looking for keen crew members to join us. All types of keelboats are welcome, including Shrimpers and Hawks.

There is no better way to spend a Sunday morning than participating in some friendly racing on the Range followed by lunch on the Yacht Club terrace.

We also organise passage races returning from the rallies and compete in Inter-Club racing in the South West, a good way to meet up with other sailors and make new friends.

Our annual Cruiser Regatta is one day of racing, normally consisting of 2 back-to-back races, and like the other races, is friendly and welcoming with all boats encouraged to take part.

The SYC Cruisers are an enthusiastic and sociable bunch. We frequently get together in the Club throughout the year kicking off the season with a commissioning supper and finishing with a laying up supper with prize-giving. Keep an eye on the SYC website social calendar for other cruiser events as well as talks from invited speakers on a host of topics.
