Melbourne Boat Show - Docklands © Boating Industry Association of Victoria

With impending boat shows taking place in Australia's two largest cities, we bring you the latest news from both.

In Victoria the waterfront space is at a premium for the 2022 Melbourne Boat Show at Docklands as the 20-23 October event approaches. The advice is not to delay, as just four waterfront sites remain available, and there is continuing enquiry and interest. At this stage the entirety of the Northern bank of Victoria Harbour is close to full up.

See the most recent list of exhibiting dealers, brands and businesses. After a three-year absence the appetite for a boat show in Melbourne is huge. Expectations are very high for a great event for visitors and for exhibitors. Sanctuary Cove and Auckland are usually good indicators, and they've been great successes this year.

In Sydney visitors will find everything needed to enjoy a lifestyle on, in and near the water when the Sydney International Boat Show returns from 28 July to 1 August at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney and Cockle Bay within the iconic Darling Harbour. From paddleboards to powerboats, kayaks to catamarans, snorkelling to sailboats, there is something for everyone to enjoy at the 53rd Sydney International Boat Show.

The must-attend marine extravaganza is Australia's largest recreational boating lifestyle event with hundreds of exhibitors set to attract more than 60,000 visitors.

And Boat Show activity is not restricted to Australia. The Thailand International Boat Show 2023 runs from January 12th-15th January at the Royal Phuket Marina and they have announced UWC as an official local partner. UWC Thailand is a non-profit international school on the beautiful island of Phuket. They offer a holistic, transformative, and rigorous IB continuum education from pre-kindergarten to grade 12, including both day and boarding students.

Marine companies continue to expand, and recent examples include Short Marine. Inside six months since partnering with the famous local Gold Coast operation, Game and Leisure Boats, Short Marine is already achieving the same standard as their Mosman headquarters. Possibly, this was recently ratified by Yamaha formally appointing Short Marine as the South East Queensland dealer, which sits alongside their Premium Dealer status on Sydney Harbour.

"We have even more capability and space here on the Gold Coast now than we do at the Spit in Mosman," said Director, Ryan Short. "This was always about bringing the same approach with our premium service offering to this very important market. South East Queensland is seeing that they can have the level they demand and require from sales to repairs, and upgrades to assistance."

Similarly Twin Disc Pacific has confirmed the expansion of their operations across the Asia Pacific region. Highly experienced team member Trevor Tucker has moved to New Zealand to provide local Twin Disc Pacific support and business development for all products and market segments in that region. Trevor will support the local Twin Disc OEM's, Dealers and owners with factory backed support in the commercial and recreational marine, and industrial land-based markets, as well as driving the local presence for Seakeeper, the world's leading boat stabiliser brand.

To coincide with Trevor's arrival, he has announced the appointment of Sean and the team from Condon Marine Services as a new Seakeeper Dealer.

The environment continues to make headlines all over the planet and the Marina Industries Association Environmental Partner, BMT Global, are providing the marina industry with a one-hour webinar discussing the topic of decarbonisation and what this means for marinas.

This interactive session aims for members to learn about the different terminology relevant to decarbonisation and climate change, drivers for decarbonisation including identifying different scopes of emissions from marina and boat harbour operations, how to calculate a carbon footprint, and key options that are available to marina owners and operators to start to offset or reduce this carbon footprint.

Alternative power sources will be identified plus how and when they may be introduced into our sector. The webinar will be presented by Greg Fisk, Global Lead - Climate Risk and Resilience, Senior Principal Consultant and Jeremy Visser, Senior Environmental Consultant from BMT Global on Tuesday 12 July at 2:00 pm AEST (Sydney Time).

Also, the International SeaKeepers Society joins forces with Clean Sailors and Cleaner Marina to inspire and encourage the global boating community towards Citizen Science and sustainable boating practices. This new partnership underlines the commitment that SeaKeepers, Clean Sailors, and Cleaner Marina all have to improve research and action for cleaner waters.

The shared goal is to encourage the global boating community to get involved in Citizen Science initiatives through research opportunities and educational programs, and to adopt best practices for those on the water as outlined in A Green Guide to Boating. Together, they will demonstrate the impact the global boating community can have on advancing marine research, conservation and education.

New Products this week: C-Map, a leader in digital marine cartography and cloud-based mapping, has made its crowd-sourced mapping data called "Genesis" available on the C-MAP navigation app this month, as well as across Lowrance®, B&G® and Semrad® apps powered by C-MAP charts. The Genesis layer allows all users across the world the ability to see C-MAP's extensive crowd-sourced database of marine mapping data that has been reviewed and quality controlled by C-MAP engineers before being published to the public as an option to view on the app's charts.

"The addition of Genesis on the C-MAP App is just another enhancement that allows users to get the best possible mapping information so they can fish better and know more about what lies beneath the waters," said Max Cecchini, Executive Vice President, C-MAP.

These power-packed family cruisers are loaded with features and ideal for weekend cruising or open water adventures. The feature-packed family power catamaran is built by the prestigious PMG shipyard who have been building a number of Silent 60 yachts for the Luxury European Silent Yachts Group.

New People this week: The weekend's reshuffle at 1 Spring St has seen the appointment of Sonya Kilkenny as the Minister for Boating and Fishing in the Victorian state government. The Boating Industry Association of Victoria welcomes Sonya to the portfolio, and congratulates her on the promotion into this ministerial position.

As the member for Carrum since 2014, Sonya has been heavily involved in boating issues, with an emphasis on the state's most prolific boating facility at Launching Way (Patterson River), which is under 1km from her electorate office.
