Dufour Smart Electric: Renewable energies for a sustainable boat

Dufour's 'Smart Electric' innovation is a significant advancement in marine propulsion technology. It is not like an electric car that requires nightly charging but more like an electric bike, where the motor complements and works alongside your sails, which should be the primary means of propulsion on a sailing yacht.

The batteries not only power the electric motor but also serve as an energy source for all onboard systems, allowing the 'Smart Electric Solution' to integrate seamlessly with how you live onboard. A hybrid electric motor replaces the large diesel engine and is powered by a substantial bank of lithium-ion and phosphate batteries charged by a 16kw generator.

Like traditional diesel engines, you can use the electric motor to power along while the generator charges the batteries. This offers quieter operation, improved efficiency, extended range, and reduced servicing costs.

You can engage 'Silent Mode' for approximately 35-40 nautical miles of noiseless navigation, perfect for harbour manoeuvres or mooring. In 'Hybrid Mode,' you can apply a discreet amount of silent electric power to assist your passage speed for up to 12 hours whenever hoisting sails and harnessing wind power becomes challenging.

The charging system operates automatically, with the generator activating when battery capacity reaches 30%, typically replenishing the batteries in 4-6 hours. The propeller also acts as a hydro generator while sailing, contributing to battery charge. Solar panels can offer an extra charging source, and when docked, shore power can recharge the batteries.

The battery capacity supports the overnight operation of a full air conditioning system without needing recharging, eliminating generator noise in peaceful anchorages.

Dufour's 'Smart Electric' solution seamlessly integrates with the boat's systems, presenting a practical and enjoyable alternative to traditional diesel engines. It ultimately enhances your sailing experience and how you live onboard.

The Smart Electric version is available on the following models: Dufour 530, Dufour 470, Dufour 44, and Dufour 41.
