World ARC 2024-25 - Beautiful beaches in Santa Cruz

by World Cruising Club 27 Feb 19:40 UTC

The World ARC rally is currently enjoying free sailing around the beautiful islands in the Galapagos, and those anchored in Santa Cruz are relishing the diverse range of tours, activities and diving.

Some are also enjoying the beaches and, for those in the know, there's a lovely 40-minute walk from the water-taxi dock at Puerto Ayora, which heads southwest from town across to Tortuga Bay. Located at the end of an easy 2.4km paved trail, Tortuga Bay comprises two gorgeous, powder-white sand beaches and an array of wildlife.

The first beach, Playa Brava is best for sunbathing or surfing, but walk just a little further around the point, through the mangroves, and there's a hidden beach called Playa Mansa fronting onto a calm lagoon. This beach is ideal for snorkelling and plays host to marine iguanas, turtles, pelicans, sharks and the occasional flamingo.

The Tortuga Bay trail is open from 6am to 5pm and is great for runners, walkers, and even prams. Going first thing in the morning, before it gets too hot is best, and also the trail is in the shade. As there are no facilities on the beach, do take plenty of water and sunscreen!
