Netley Sailing Club RS200 Club Championship

by Terry Hunt 7 Oct 2024 09:59 UTC 5 October 2024

Whilst the RS200 Inlands were taking place at Grafham Water Sailing Club (and being won by a Netley SC member), Netley Sailing Club hosted its club RS200 championship with thirteen teams taking to the start line.

With the breeze coming straight up Southampton Water at 18-20kts, blue skies, anyone would have thought it was a glamour summer sailing day!

PRO, Dan Holeman, set the fleet 5 races, all upwind / downwind, 3 short races and 2 slightly longer, not that we needed any more upwind hiking by races 4 and 5!

Quick out the blocks was Nils Jolliffe & Nick Pratt showing great upwind speed to lead from the off and never look back. This was pretty much to be the order of the day. For race one, Vicky Taylor crewed by Simon Horsfield took 2nd, with Martin Lown & Chris Fisher 3rd.

Race 2, Adam Sandison with Mattis Prince stormed out the blocks to take a comfortable win, with Nils/Nick second and Terry & Charlie Hunt 3rd.

Race 3 saw Nils and Nick back at the front with a good win for Vicky and Simon, having recovered from a capsize in race 2, with Martin and Chis 3rd.

By race four the tide had turned and was forcing the fleet over the line. A general recall ensued and Dan brought out the black flag, or in our case, the black paddle of doom!

This made sure the fleet behaved for the final 2 starts.

Again it was Nils and Nick winning race 4 with Adam & Mattis 2nd and current World RS Tera Champion, Will Stratton-Brown crewed by his Dad, Harry, taking 3rd.

The final race of the day and by this time, most of us just wanted to be ashore, saw Nils and Nick swap over and finished off with the most convincing win of the day, with Martin & Chris cementing 2nd overall with a 2nd place and Will and Harry taking 3rd.

So with a clean sweep, Nils and Nick took the win from Martin & Chris and Mattis and Adam just pipping Terry & Charlie to 3rd overall on countback.

After racing, everyone brought their aching limbs to the comfort of the club house for a meal and then finished off with some live music, with ex commodore, Rob Bowen reforming his band, Sock Monkey.

I think to say, we all had a great day's racing!
