Topham Cup for 36R Vane boats at Fleetwood Model Yacht Club

We had eight Skippers for our first Vane sailing event of the year. Not too bad as the number seems to be increasing each year now, and with a couple of the regulars away from a possible double digit number, for the small 36Rs.

A northerly light drift isn't great and requires some extra skill in reaching along the lake for both directions, but the afternoon swung Westerly for some textbook run and beat legs in a somewhat stronger wind.

Walter hit off great for the first race against John, winning both legs for only his second time out with the vanes. Peter I had a new boat to him for some fine tune fettling and had also joined us for the day with the smaller boats.

The extra wind forced a few of the skippers into downsizing their rigs as the day went on, all except the older heavier boats. Bob and Wizzy were able to use a spinnaker by the end of the day for their first time and were probably getting ready in anticipation for the 36R Nationals scheduled in May.

Peter Whiteside along with mate Stuart clinched the day, hardly dropping a point for an enjoyable day's sailing. Cold but dry and a nice full lake, ready for the next Vane outing.

Results:

1. Peter Whiteside - 24pts
2. Keith and Bob - 22pts
3. Olly Murray - 18 pts

Maybe the age of the skippers is catching up and sprinting is not the preferred option Normally we would have a fairly even split fleet from the two class of boats, sometimes favouring the Classic.
