Young sailors from across the Thames Valley region converged for an exciting day of dinghy racing at the 2025 Thames Valley Challenge. This highly anticipated 2-boat team racing event, which was designed to introduce youth and junior sailors to the thrill of competition, took place on July 5, 2025.

Hosted by Claires Court's Outdoor Education Department, the Thames Valley Challenge unfolded at the picturesque Maidenhead Sailing Club. This location offered excellent facilities, including dedicated spectator areas, ensuring a comfortable experience for participants and their supporters.

The event welcomed teams of four sailors from clubs within and surrounding the Thames Valley. To ensure a level playing field and encourage new talent, participants were 16 years old or under on the day of the event and were not part of an RYA Regional Training Group of any class.

The Thames Valley Challenge was particularly welcoming to first-time competitors, with on-water coaching provided for those at the back of the fleet, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to learn and improve

The focus of the event was two-boat team racing, a dynamic format where each team comprised two helms and two crews. Teams navigated a starboard S-shaped course, with a straightforward rule for victory: the team whose boat crossed the finish line in the last position was declared the loser. This exciting format maximized the number of races and entries that could be completed in a single day with over 50 races completed.

The event concluded with some excellent displays of team racing skill. UTSC emerged as the clear victor, dominating their races with a perfect 100% win record across all six of their contests. Their consistent performance secured them the coveted first-place position.

Following closely were the Claires Court Bouys, who had a strong showing with an 87.5% win rate over eight races, earning them a well-deserved second place. MSC Atlantic also demonstrated impressive skill, rounding out the top three with a 75% win rate. The event successfully brought together numerous youth and junior sailors, providing a fantastic platform for competitive racing and valuable experience for all teams involved.

Sammy Isaacs Johnson, Head Sailing Coach at Claires Court School said "It was a pleasure to be able to host 60 young people at our sailing home. A year's worth of planning culminated in a smooth, fun day for all involved and hopefully a well deserved boost to the grass roots of sailing within the Thames Valley Region. Does your club fancy hosting 2026? Get in touch we are more than happy to help."

The Thames Valley Challenge serves as a crucial step in the team racing pathway, building upon RYA training and preparing young sailors for future events such as the RYA ET's RS Feva Fleet series. The event was a fantastic opportunity to experience the excitement of dinghy racing, and it proved to be a successful and memorable day for all involved.
