Transpac Onboard Episode 4: Anything Can Happen at Sea

All Transpac 2025 competitors are now at sea and actively racing to Hawaii. We take a look at the Pasha Live Race Tracker and talk about the significant wind hole confronting a contingent of competitors.

Four boats have retired from racing — two for equipment issues, two for medical reasons — and all are now safely ashore or close to it. Our correspondent, Ava on Convexity", recounts hearing her first mayday at sea from one of them, and reflects on the enormity of the task ahead as the fleet continues its 2,225 nautical mile race across the Pacific Ocean.

Episode 1

In the first episode of 2025’s Transpac Onboard, we meet legendary navigator Stan Honey in the cockpit of Lucky, preparing to race across the Pacific. Stan says there are 3 ways to win (or lose) this race: getting into the synoptic breeze off the start, choosing the right slot across the Pacific, and gybing for an optimal finish.

Episode 2

And they're off! The first 16 starters in the 2025 Transpac have set sail for Hawaii. Host Lydia Mullan, Managing Editor of SAIL Magazine, takes us to the racecourse for drone footage of the start accompanied by a weather forecast and analysis of the live Pasha YB race tracker.

Episode 3

Forty-eight hours into the 2025 Transpac, SAIL’s Lydia Mullan virtually hops on board with Alli Bell, about 400nm off the coast of LA. It was a good, but lumpy first stretch and the crew was happy to have some of the most challenging conditions in its wake. Then, we hear from Ava Wilson, crew aboard the 68ft Gunboat, Convexity², as she prepares for her Saturday start.
