19-21 September 2025
Last weekend, 19-21 September, the Royal Southern Yacht Club hosted the culminating event in our flagship Summer Series - the September Regatta.
This event included the inaugural UK National Championships for the new Performance 30 class. Built on the success of the P40 series, this class encourages high performance racing for similarly rated IRC cruiser/racers around 30-38ft in length.
The P30s began their championship on Friday, with three windward-leeward races followed by a 'round the cans' to finish. 'Jukebox' of J Smart took a commanding lead with three race wins on the first day - which they held throughout the regatta to take the National Championship title by a very impressive twenty points! There were four J/109s in the top five in the P30 class showing the enduring success of this popular design. In the final results, Peter McConnell's 'Karaboudjan' was second, with the Archambault A35 'Njord' of Andrew Screech taking the final podium spot.
On Saturday and Sunday, the P30s were joined by the rest of the competitors. IRC 1 had split out results for the Performance 40s, and the J/111s (scored as one design). Ed Bell's JPK 1180 'Dawn Treader' won the class overall, and also the P40 sub-class. Paul Wollmann's Bermudan flagged 'Frequent Flyer' races as both a one design J/111, and a P40, and took a hatrick of prizes as 2nd in IRC 1, 2nd P40, and 1st J/111! 'Happy Daize', the J/112E of James Chalmers, was third.
IRC 2 consisted entirely of boats rated as P30s, but there were separate regatta results for the two weekend days - which allowed those who could not compete on the Friday a shot at the podium. When discounting the Friday, 'Jukebox' still ended up on top, with 'Njord' promoted to second. Edward Mockridge and his team on 'Elaine Again' were third.
In the small but hotly contested IRC 3 class, Ian Handley, Tim James, and their team on the Mustang 'Banter' won overall from Simon Shillaker's J/92 'Jambo', with Sam Cox's 'Liquidity Risk' in third.
Over on the White Group course, the J/70 and SB20 classes competed in two days of short course sprint racing. 10 races were completed across the two days. In the J/70 class, the Royal Southern's own Academy Team led by Morgan Reynolds took victory. Meanwhile in the SB20 class, Sean Nee on 'Boomerang' took the event win from Charlie Whelan on 'Breaking Bod' who won five of the ten races after missing the first three.
On the shore, competitors, members, and guests, enjoyed a legendary Caribbean themed Royal Southern party on the Saturday evening with a live steel band as they came off the water along with flowing Dark'n'Stormies. Youth Academy member 'DJ Sam' ensured the party continued well into the night.
So that concludes our Summer Series for 2025. We hope to welcome new and returning boats for 2026 on 9-10 May, 13-14 June, 18-19 July, and 19-20 September.
