The next generation of marina professionals took their first steps on Tuesday, 30 September, as the Marina Industries Association (MIA) launched its Dockhand Course at Shellharbour Marina.

Supported by Shellharbour City Council, the inaugural program welcomed 15 local school students who participated in a one-day course. Led by Shellharbour Marina's team - Les Binkin CMM, Ben Schooley CMM and Jarvis Binkin - the students were introduced to the essential responsibilities of a Dockhand, including daily operations, workplace health and safety, weather awareness, customer service, and an overview of the marina industry and its diverse career opportunities.

The program concluded with a guided tour of Shellharbour Marina's facilities, joined by Mayor Chris Homer and his team. Mayor Homer presented the students with their course completion certificates, highlighting the collaborative commitment of both Shellharbour City Council and Shellharbour Marina to supporting education, skills development and pathways into the marine sector.

"The Dockhand Course represents an important step in developing future talent for our industry," said Suzanne Davies, MIA CEO. "We're delighted to see Shellharbour Marina and Council working together to introduce young people to the opportunities and career paths the marina sector has to offer."

The Dockhand Course, developed by MIA, is a practical and engaging training program designed for anyone new to the industry or considering a career in the sector. Combining theory, demonstrations, and hands-on learning, the course covers the following areas:

  • Basic marina infrastructure
  • Types of boats
  • Dockhand daily operations
  • Health and safety
  • Weather fundamentals
  • Marina industry overview and career pathways

From early 2026, this course will be available for all MIA members to deliver locally at their own facilities - the perfect introduction for new recruits, students, or anyone curious about a career on the water.
