Nacra 15 UK National Championship 2025 at the Allspars Final Fling

Nacra 15 sailors from across the UK gathered at the Royal Western Yacht Club on Saturday the 11th of October in sunny Plymouth for their National Championship, held this year as part of the Allspars Final Fling. The day began with blue sky and no wind, leading to all fleets being AP'ed.

The first race began as the wind settled, but not for long as the race was abandoned on the second lap, due to the wind shifting and the course becoming one long port tack. Once the course was re-layed, the first race ensued, Patrick and Jess taking the win followed by Will and Eliza then Marcus and Maddie. A common theme of the day was the constant wind shifts and gusts leading to some intense racing. This was prevalent in the second race as Will and Eliza took the win closely followed by Patrick and Jess.

Race 3 was the much anticipated long distance race, testing all boats with the navigation of Plymouth Sound, stamina was most definitely required at the end of a long day! All sailors were delighted to complete the course correctly with Patrick and Jess coming in first with a small margin after Marcus and Maddie sailed a very fast last leg.

After a sociable evening at the Royal Western followed by a curry for 20+ the Fleet was up and active early Sunday morning. Three more races were planned for the day with GBR126 having to call in a last minute replacement crew due to illness.

The Delta flag went up around 9.30am, upon launching the fleet were greeted with near perfect conditions, although a little shifty. The start line was laid just to the east of Drake's Island and the windward mark positioned under Mountbatten. It looked like it was going to be another tricky day with plenty of shifts and gusts. After a short postponement, race one got under way and proved extremely close with the top three boats rounding the windward mark for the first time all together, this theme would continue throughout the three laps of race one, with the final places only being decided on the last downwind. With GBR 070 taking the win, closely followed by GBR 378 then GBR334.

Race Two followed in a similar vain as race one, with GBR 162 rounding the first windward mark comfortably in first although a shifty downwind leg would see them drop to third. In the end the top three boats would continue jockeying for position up until the last upwind to the finish line, GBR 378 went on to take the win by only a metre, followed by GBR 334, then GBR 070 rounding out the top three, with GBR 162 only just missing out on a top three finish.

After a short postponement to allow a Brittany Ferry to clear the racing area, the final long distance race of the day got under way, following a similar course as the day before. GBR 334 was first to round the leeward mark at the western end of the breakwater, with GBR 070 in second, and GBR 378 rounding outside the top 3. With a long beat outside the breakwater, the fleet condensed at the next turning mark, although the top three positions did not change after a close reach through the break water and back to Royal Western Yacht Club, where the finish line was positioned. GBR 334 took the win with GBR 070 in second and, GBR 378 in third.

After finishing, the fleet retuned to shore, and the event prize-giving was held at a very busy Royal Western Yacht Club. The theme of the weekend - close racing, was evident in the final standings, with only 2 points between first and second. GBR 070 of Patrick and Jess finished the event in first, with GBR 334 Will and Eliza in second and GBR 378 Marcus and Maddie rounding out the top three.

A massive congratulations to all competitors for racing in some incredibly shifty/gusty conditions, a special mention to the teams on GBR 074 James and Connor and GBR 253 George and Jack for competing in their first class racing events. A huge thanks to Royal Western Yacht Club and Allspars for hosting us as part of the Final Fling Regatta and to the team at Plymouth Yacht Haven for allowing us to use their yard for boat parking.
