The HYC Round the Island Dinghy Race returns on 7 March 2026, bringing the curtain down on the club's ever-popular Frostbite Series with one of the most anticipated events of the winter calendar.
Hosted by Howth Yacht Club, this iconic race challenges competitors to take on a full circumnavigation of Ireland's Eye - a course that is as tactical as it is scenic.
With 46 entries already confirmed, a strong and diverse fleet is assembling. Classes represented include ILCAs (Lasers), RS Aeros, IDRAs, and Melges, promising competitive racing across the board. The variety of boats ensures an exciting spectacle both on the water and from the shore.
March weather will always keeps sailors guessing and will ultimately dictate the format, but the intention is to run an opening race in Howth Sound followed by the headline Round the Island Race. If conditions cooperate, it will be a full and fitting finale to months of winter competition.
One of the defining tactical calls is which way to round Ireland's Eye. The decision — clockwise or anti-clockwise — hinges on tidal flow, shifting late-winter wind patterns, and sea state. The course is known for testing even experienced sailors, with cold water, low temperatures, and variable winds demanding sharp decision making and plenty of stamina.
