The French Olympic Week, the second event of the Sailing Grand Slam series, concluded today in Hyères after six days of intense racing. Spain's Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona emerged victorious, repeating their success from the Trofeo Princesa Sofía in Palma de Mallorca.
Holding a nine-point lead going into the final day, Xammar and Cardona focused on maintaining their advantage.
"We knew we had a nine-point lead and focused on managing it, staying close to the British team, which was our main objective. It was a different kind of day, not about going out to win, but about being smart and controlling the situation, which isn't easy," said Xammar, bronze medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Reflecting on their performance, Xammar added: "This week we took the step forward we knew we were capable of. We hadn't felt completely comfortable before, but here we managed to fine-tune everything. When we're performing well, we feel very strong compared to the fleet. Still, we know there's room for improvement. We've only been sailing together for just over a year, so as a team, we can grow a lot. The next two months will be key as we push to take another step forward."
Cardona, named World Sailing's Youth Sailor of the Year, also highlighted the team's progress: "We experienced very varied conditions this week and felt more comfortable than in Mallorca and at the European Championship. We're improving step by step. It's a positive result, but now the focus shifts to the World Championship in Japan this August, where we aim to fight for the win. I've only been in this class for a year, so there's still room to improve, but we're on the right track thanks to our team. Now it's time to keep pushing, I believe we can go very far."
Second place went to the British duo Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris, the current European champions and silver medalists from the opening Sailing Grand Slam event in Mallorca.
France's Matisse Pacaud and Lucie De Gennes secured third place on home waters.
"We felt really good throughout the week. The conditions were excellent and very varied, with both strong and light winds, which made it a complete regatta. We're very happy with how we performed and to finish third — especially after a difficult start to the week in lighter winds and a larger fleet," said Pacaud.
"We managed to improve from the elimination series onwards and are pleased to secure another podium after Palma. This result is very important for us, it's a Grand Slam event, and performing well here in France, surrounded by our teammates, makes it even more special," added de Gennes
Looking ahead, the French duo remains confident: "We feel very confident for the upcoming events. We'll continue our preparation with the next Grand Slams, leading into the World Championship in Japan this August. It's a good path forward, and we're excited for what's ahead."
In the medal races, victories were claimed by Manon Pennaneac'h and Pierre Williot (FRA) in the first race, and Giacomo Ferrari with Alessandra Dubbini (ITA) in the second.
