Musto Lark National Championship 2026 hosted by Fowey Sailing - Day 1

by Tim Fells 26 Jul 16:01 UTC 26-29 July 2026

The resurgent Lark class has mustered an excellent turn out, the largest for many years, for their National Championships in Fowey, sponsored by Musto and Craftinsure.

The fleet comprises a very strong group of youth sailors who are out to challenge their skills against a large number of young guns, Lark champions and golden oldies back to relive past glories. Fowey has been the venue for legendary Lark championships in the past and the combined clubs of Gallants and RFYC have pulled out all the stops to provide another memorable week.

The forecasts for the first day had for some time predicted a 15-20 knot northwesterly to provide an exciting start to the week. On the sail down to the race area, the forecasts were looking good for a challenging but manageable couple of races. However, in the final minutes before the start sequence the breeze started to build and build with white water across the bay.

After an initial postponement the PRO pulled the plug with the wind hitting 34 knots on the committee boat and showing no signs of abating. All the fleet successfully battled back against these extreme conditions to the safety of Fowey harbour and to prepare for what is now planned to be a 4 race day on Monday.
