Volvo Ocean Race - MAPFRE sufrido un percance

MAPFRE, el barco español de la Volvo Ocean Race, la vuelta al mundo a vela por equipos, y la competición más dura de este tipo que existe, ha sufrido un percance en las últimas horas mientras atraviesa el legendario Triángulo de las Bermudas, durante el día 14 de la etapa 6, entre Itajaí (Brasil), y Newport (Estados Unidos), de 9.300 kilómetros.

Este área del océano Atlántico es conocida por su inestabilidad meteorológica y súbitos cambios de tiempo, como el que han sufrido los del barco español: al atravesar una zona de lluvia intensa se han quedado frenados, y al mismo tiempo una inesperada racha de 50 nudos -casi 100 km por hora-, ha hecho que el barco volcara. El MAPFRE ha estado a punto de perder las dos velas que tenía almacenadas en la proa con las que se hubieran desvanecido sus posibilidades de plantar cara a los rivales.



Aun así, los del doble campeón olímpico Xabi Fernández han conseguido recuperar el control del barco, y continuar en su lucha por un puesto de podio en esta etapa, en la que de momento van cuartos. Se prevé que lleguen a meta este jueves día 7 de mayo a primera hora de la mañana, aunque, como siempre en la Volvo Ocean Race, serán el viento y el océano quienes decidan.

En estos momentos la flota la lidera el equipo franco-chino Dongfeng Race Team, segundo en la general, seguido por Team Brunel. En el barco de bandera holandesa militan los cántabros Pablo Arrarte y Javier De la Plaza. Tercero es el líder de la general, el Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, en el que también figura un español, el coruñés Roberto 'Chuny' Bermúdez.



Todos han superado ya la barrera de las 1.000 millas a la meta, en Newport, USA, y les espera un sprint final de tres días en el que se enfrentarán a la famosa Corriente del Golfo.

Se espera que el día 7 de mayo concluya la etapa 6 de 9.300 kilómetros entre Itajaí (Brasil) y Newport (USA). Por delante les quedarán otras 3 para acabar la competición deportiva más larga que existe, la Volvo Ocean Race.
