2016 HKRNVR Memorial Vase - Overall report

by RHKYC on 26 Apr 2016
2015-16 Old Mutual Top Dog Trophy Series RHKYC / Xaume Olleros
The HKRNVR Memorial Vase pursuit race is the finale of the Old Mutual Top Dog Trophy Series 2015-2016 which combines the results from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s quartet of pursuit races in order to identify Hong Kong’s top helm for the season.

Last year’s winners, Peter Backe and Anthony Day are looking to make it two in a row as they head up the list of contenders going into the final race.

Presented to the Club by the (then) local Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, the trophy came with a proviso that 'the course should take participating yachts into waters patrolled by the HKRNVR”. The passage of time since the event’s inception has seen the course for the race adjusted to take into account Marine Department restrictions on sailing and towing boats through the congested central harbour. In keeping with the Deed of Gift, however, the Race Officer will select a course which will take the fleet out through the harbour to the eastern approaches and back - his particular choice of course influenced by the prevailing wind conditions on the day.

The HKRNVR Memorial Vase is a pursuit race, which is different to normal yacht racing. Competitors are given staggered start times under RHKATI handicap, i.e. the slowest boats start first and then the faster boats set off in pursuit with the time delay between classes of boats being determined by their handicaps. If all boats are sailed equally well, they should (in theory) all finish at the same time.

Following the race, a prize presentation will be held at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, with prizes to be awarded not only to the various winners of the HKRNVR Memorial Vase, but also the overall winner of the 2015-2016 Top Dog Trophy Series. The Top Skipper will be presented with a jacket from Ralph Lauren, Official Apparel for the Series, together with a bespoke iPhone 6, customised by Connexion D’Art.
