New dog, old tricks - Oooooh yeah! 40 Open Sunreef Power

40 Open Sunreef Power Sunreef Yachts
Foiling technology may be taking the sailing world by storm right now, but it has been utilised in military and passenger applications for decades. Much easier to drag a blade through the water than a mallet, after all. Sunreef have been working away to translate their concepts of a super high speed day boat into reality, and it looks like they are close.

Sunreef are normally associated with large sailing and power cats, with more than enough comfort to look after any requirements, but the 'new' 42-footer is unashamedly about one thing - pace, and at 60 knots+, it is a decent card to have in your hand. So a composite flyer is born and retractable foils, opening decks, expanding sunshades, seriously interesting outboard and stern drive (Z Drive) options, and a futuristic profile mean they could become a little de rigueur on some of the superyachts floating around.

So in low rider form you get the stern drives at 425 to 1100hp a side. Outboards for the retractable foiling version are listed as 2x627hp, 4x300hp or 4x400hp, and whilst it is not clear which style is being produced as the first hull they are working on right now, it will be something to see when it all gets revealed. Low rider buyers should not be perturbed, however, for Sunreef claim this version will also crack the 60 mark, should you so desire.

The foiler is airborne at 25 knots, so it should be able to cruise comfortably, and win just about every drag race. The promise of reasonable fuel economy is also there. The two sunbeams aft offer forward facing seating and huge two and three person sun lounges facing aft. The opening gunwales, very much like some sort of transformer, turn the whole craft into a wee island. Three persons can site at the covered helm, with all of its multi function displays, and then up for'ard you can have yet another subbed over a little buddy style cabin or a more practical settee and tables. The hulls have all the accommodation you could need, so an extra seating area, that can also be covered for places with wicked sun, seems to be the go!

The full set of specs from Sunreef Yachts is below...

Sunreef Yachts presented the first open foiling catamaran concept in 2014 during the Cannes Yachting Festival. Since that time company’s engineers and designers have been developing the concept to achieve the world’s most technically advanced multihull luxury speeder available on the market.

Applying a multihull design to a day cruiser concept allows for the gain of a massive lounging space and extreme stability at high speeds. Naturally balanced, the 40 Open Sunreef Power doesn’t require stabilizing systems and provides a fast and safe navigation experience. A potential that this model explores to the fullest, as it is featured in both planning and hydrofoil version.

The 40 Open Sunreef Power is equipped with dynamic inboard propulsion ranging from 2x425 HP to 2x1100 HP to offer an impressive speed potential of over 60kts. Taking speed to a higher level, the hydrofoil-equipped 40 Open Sunreef Power H is offered in multiple outboard engine configurations from 2x627 HP to 4x400 HP. The innovative retractable hydrofoil system implemented lifts the boat above the water when cruising above 25kts. As a result, the 40 Open Sunreef Power H can glide above the waves to attain speeds up to 60kts in foilborne mode. With the drag reduced to an absolute minimum, the boat also benefits from extremely low fuel consumption and long range.

A beamy alternative for classic day boats, the 40 Open Sunreef Power represents a new level of onboard comfort. Two lateral aft folding platforms enhance the already generous living space of the catamaran, creating perfect conditions to enjoy watersports. The volume below the aft sunpad conceals immense storage to keep water toys and diving gear at hand. The helm, fitted with sporty seats is well protected and equipped with a touchscreen to easily scroll through the boat’s systems.

The bow-placed dining area uses the beam of the boat expertly, providing for a maximum of surface with adjustable tables and abundant seating. Depending on the Owner’s wish, this part of the deck can be turned into a comfortable cabin perfect for overnight trips. Big volumes are also available down in the boat’s hulls to house a bathroom, an additional bedroom or utility room. Premium audio-video systems and individually selected tech gear, custom tailored upholstery and new layout solutions – the options to customize the future 40 Sunreef Powers are limitless.
