Adrian Flanagan Rounds the Horn

by Sail-World Cruising on 22 Feb 2006

At 21.53 GMT last night Adrian Flanagan rounded the small island that is the infamous Cape Horn.

As Expedition Manager Louise Flanagan said, ‘Symbolically this is wonderful but the reality is that the hard work to continue to round the Horn will take place over the next 4 or 5 days. Ricardo has read the perfect weather window for Adrian to achieve this and so he will have to go hell for leather to clear the tip of South America and be safely out the other side into less volatile seas.

‘A really huge milestone for Adrian is within his grasp now - to become a member of a very small and elite group of people known as The International Association of Cape Horners. The requirements for this are that 'The Horn rounding shall be part of a non-stop passage of at least 3000nm and shall pass through 50 degrees south in both Pacific (or Indian) and Atlantic Oceans'. Adrian will probably be more proud of achieving this than anything else during the course of this trip. As for wearing an earring (pirates got to wear one for circling The Horn), I think he'll probably pass!

The route will now head north over the Pacific towards the Bering Strait. A westward passage through the Arctic will lead to the final stage, south-westerly across the North Sea and back into The Channel. The voyage will take approximately 300 days and cover 35,000 miles.

The expedition yacht is a Trireme 38 Mk IV. Designed by the renowned French naval architect, Francoise Charpentier and hand-built in France from 316 TI (Titanium) grade stainless steel, the boat has been selected for her great strength and safety.

Measure twice. Cut once.
Perhaps even measured thrice? Yes. On reflection, I think we can absolutely lock that one in. Perhaps even measured thrice? Yes. On reflection, I think we can absolutely lock that one in. So then, let's consider all this. Now that initial quantum was keeping the ambition in check. No headlines. No elongated rig. No overtly aggressive sail plan.
