Andrew Brown reports on the Bladerider Foiling Moth and Coaching scene:

This last weekend I competed in my first International Moth regatta in New Zealand. Three regattas have already been held this season, but with my coaching commitments etc I haven’t been able to compete.

The regatta was the Auckland Champs held at Howick Yacht Club, this regatta was a combined Auckland Champs for Optimists, P’s, Starlings, Splashes, 420’s and Paper Tigers. Howick did a great job with the organisation and the race officer did a good job in accommodating us as a class.

The wind was light for the racing, just foiling and at times too light for foiling. In this stuff with my body weight, boat set up and technique I had a bit of an advantage, winning all the races – but the competition was good with Darren Schofield beating me to the top mark in the last race by sailing the shifts and pressure way better than me.

Also on Thursday and Friday I did the lunchtime stint at the boat show with my boat sponsor Kiwi Yachting – the boat show is quite a cool thing to be involved with and it was great to give something back to Kiwi Yachting.

Next on the calendar: I am going down to New Plymouth to coach a 420 team before their nationals and selection trials to get in the New Zealand team for the 420 worlds.

The Laser Radial worlds is also about to begin in Auckland it will be good to see what the coaches are up to at this regatta – I have been really spoilt to have three World Champs here in New Zealand to see the coaching developments from around the world .

Then at Easter I am down to Lyttelton to see my parents, watch the Optimist Nationals, talk to the Optimist coaches, and to get some serious time on the water with the moth, in hopefully varying and tough conditions.
