Sail-Ski Wanaka 2010 Ken Urquhart

The Wanaka Yacht and Power Boat Club in association with treble Cone Ski Area is once again hosting its popular Sail-Ski Regatta from 17th to 19th September this year.

Sail-Ski Wanaka 2010 is a unique event combining Ski/snowboarding and Yacht racing and is an excellent way to enjoy some spring skiing and kick start the sailing season in Wanaka's magical environment.

The format is simple, three sailors make a team, every sailor must ski, every skier must sail.

The venue for the skiing on 17th September is Treble Cone Ski Area which is of world reknown for its superb terrain and spectacular views of Lake Wanaka and surrounding mountains.
A slalom course of moderate difficulty will be set to cater for a range of competitors including masters, disabled skiers youth, male, female, telemark skiers and snowboarders. A simple handicap system has been adopted to allow everyone to compete on an equal footing. Competitors are scored on their time consistency over 3 runs, a perfect score being 3 equal times.

After racing, competitors will be able to spend the afternoon enjoying the many delights of Treble Cone Ski Area.

A two day Etchells fleet racing series on the 18th and 19th September on Lake Wanaka provides the sailing component of the contest and should be a worthy test for everyone. Local breezes for this time of year typically range from 3 - 15 knots, guaranteed a challenge and always enjoyable. The boats are supplied by the local Etchells fleet owners and are allocated to teams by ballot and rotated to keep things as fair as possible.

The winners of the prestigious Sail-Ski Trophy will be the team with the best combined scores from both the sailing and skiing. There will also be awards for fastest individual and team ski racers and winners of the sailing series.

Entries are strictly limited to 14 teams and will be accepted on a first come with payment basis.
