J/24 World Championships at Malmö, Sweden - Day 2

by Event Media 18 Aug 2010 06:02 UTC 15-20 August 2010

Home win in a downpour

The worst possible tourist conditions, but perfect sailing on the second day of J24 in Malmo. Light and tricky winds in the first race were followed by broaches and breakage in the second, with both races held in heavy rain. Even starts and tight roundings challenged crew work and nerves for the participants.

In the first race of the day A Gunnarsson (SWE) led from the end of the first upwind leg and won the first race. M Garzmann (GER) advanced to second after a nice last upwind leg in the light and shifty breeze.

In the second race the wind increased to 12 m/s. M Santa Cruz (BRA) made a false start and is having a poor beginning to the worlds. T Healy (USA) won the fourth race before PH Persson (SWE), who had a nice start and sailed with good height and speed on the upwind legs. Third was previous champion A Casale (ITA).

After four races Casale is leading Pereira (ARG) and Karsunke (GER). Ingham (USA), Gunnarsson (SWE) and Southworth (GBR) follow in the battle for the title.

The races are visible from the shore close to the Turning Torso building starting at 10.30 each day.
