Our second rotation of Disaster Response Teams have returned with detailed assessments of the current state of the island communities off Vanua Levu's north coast.
We are most concerned about Yaro Village on Kia Island. Their fishing based economy is in ruins. How do you survive on an island when your livelihood has been destroyed by a tropical cyclone? We think we can help.
6 years ago, after Cyclone Winston, Sea Mercy volunteers assisted fishermen and women in Fiji's eastern islands to repair their badly damaged fibreglass fishing boats and restore their fishing based economy.
Now our volunteers are back in action after the Christmas carnage that was Cyclone Yasa. This time we are in the islands off Vanua Levu's northern Macuata Coast. With half of their houses and all of their crops destroyed, their fishing gear swept away and 11 fishing boats damaged, the 187 villagers of Yaro on Kia Island could use a helping hand. If we can assist them to restore their fishing based economy, they can begin to rebuild their village.
