The hotels in Kuala Terengganu are experiencing a boom in tourist arrivals despite the current monsoon spell – thanks to the Monsoon Cup.
The foreign sailing enthusiasts and team members from the participating countries have contributed to an increase in occupancy rates of the hotels here.
'We are almost running full house currently and this is especially so during the Monsoon Cup season. Even domestic arrivals have surged. I believe Malaysians and particularly the people of Terengganu have accepted the Monsoon Cup. They take the opportunity and taking advantage of the school holidays, to bring their families to watch this prestigious event,' said Primula Beach Resort Marketing and Communications Manager Tina Surinda.
However, Tina also said the hotel’s aggressive promotions for the monsoon period has also contributed to the increase in guests staying at the hotel.
'There’s been a good mix of foreign and local guests staying in our hotel,' she said, adding that there was a reverse scenario before the Monsoon Cup made its presence in Terengganu.
Meanwhile, the Ri-Yaz Heritage Resort & Spa, located at the venue in Pulau Duyong, is lively with activities with most guests enjoying the 5-star structure modeled with a ‘kampung’ ambience that comes with hi-tech facilities.
'We are running full house with visitors, officials of the Monsoon Cup and participants staying here,' said general manager Malizan Zakaria.
He said the concept of the hotel - which has 13 royal suites and 79 chalets - and landscaping is to promote traditional accommodation, to allow their room guests to get a feel of kampung living.
In fact Malizan said the resort is engaging the services of 150 experienced staff to complement the current staff contingent of 110 workers.
'We need to provide prompt services. The Monsoon Cup is a great and prestigious event and we need to show our hospitality with efficient services,' he said.
Malizan said since taking over the management from the former team, the resort has for the first time in history housed all the rulers for the Rulers’ Conference in October.
'Again we had a busy week during the FEI World Endurance Race last month and now we have the Monsoon Cup. The visitors keep coming despite the current rainy spell. I guess the Monsoon Cup is the best thing to happen here in terms of tourist arrivals during the monsoon period,' Malizan said.
