Our Yacht of the Week is Antares III, the 30m yacht built by New Zealand-based Yachting Developments, a composite pilothouse sloop which was adjudged the ‘Best Sailing Yacht 30-40m’ in the The World Superyacht Awards 2012.

She sports a 42.7m tall high modulus carbon fibre rig with EC6 continuous composite rigging and a Southern Furl boom, allowing her to carry an impressive 4,876sq ft. of sail area up wind. She was launched in Auckland in May 2011.

Dixon Yacht Design provided the naval architecture and exterior styling for the yacht while the interior of the yacht was designed by Rhodes Young. The yacht consists of upper and lower saloons that are open to each other. More accommodation is provided via two spacious guest cabins and a full beam aft Owners cabin complete with private deck access. Four crew members can be accommodated in an area forward of the galley and crew mess.

The yacht complies with the stringent Germanisher Lloyd and MCA classification requirements and, even when so light, is incredibly strong. She is built using composites and is 25-30% lighter than those made using standard aluminum. The composite structure of the yacht is made using post cure epoxy Eglass/Carbon/Kevlar that comes with high strength foam sandwich technology. The hull features a Kevlar outer skin which allows increased impact resistance.

The interior features blonde teak shades with a horizontal grain contrasted by wide Walnut planked floors. The interior was built by specialist tradesmen employed in-house by Yachting Developments. The owner’s stateroom is full beam with private access to the cockpit.

Spars and rigging are carbon fibre with hydraulic furlers, the mainsheet is attached to an arch aft keeping the mainsheet clear of passengers and crew. The modern underwater shape includes a high-aspect carbon fibre rudder with direct quadrant non-assisted steering giving absolute feel to the helmsman.

Yachting Developments are proud to tell that the build time for this yacht was less than 400days.
