Kieler Woche - Excellent form from Hunger and Kleiner + Video

by Hermann Hell on 29 Jun 2013 Serial winners of Kieler Woche have proven on the second day of the international part of the event, just why they are up for the gold year after year. The five-time 505 World Champion Wofgang Hunger (Kiel) and his crew Julien Kleiner (Munich) had to discard merely a second position after six races. It looks like they may triumph again for the 21st time at the 131st edition.

Helge and Christian Sach (Zarnekau) are dominating their fleet even more clearly. After two days, they are still undefeated and are confident in the leading position of the F18 catamaran in front of 35 competitors. Their seventh victory at Schilksee seems to be only a question of two days. In the second catamaran class, there may also be a repeat winner in the end. Ten-time triumphant Detlef Mohr (Reinfeld) with Karen Wichardt has finally climbed up to rank two in the Hobie 16. Altogether, German teams are leading in nine of the 17 international classes.

The other 505 competitors can only take their hat off to Wolfgang Hunger's and Julien Kleiner's performance. 'It's a class of its own here in Kiel. He was fast and smart today,' said Meike Schomaeker (Kiel), who is at least European Champion in the 505 with Holger Jess (Eckernfoerde) and currently third in the overall ranking. Claas Lehmann (Hamburg) still seems to be looking for the right turn at Kiel to be able to put the bite on Wolfgang Hunger. In April, Lehmann became World Champion together with Leon Oehme (Kiel) at Barbados, now he is only at rank nine. 'These are hard conditions for us here, we have never been that good strong winds. And at Barbados we benefited from my experience with sailing in current, so I was better in evaluating the currents at the Worlds.'

In the keel boat class B/one (the 23ft boat that was launched by Bavaria last year and is now having its Kiel Week premiere), there is no chance of a title defence. International participants are still rare, but Peter Meyer, chief of the class, is satisfied with the performance among the 13 crews. 'The cancellation of a team from overseas of course bothers us personally. But apart from that, the boat delivers on its promises. It's just so much fun.' Two years ago, people were thinking about how to fill the gap between dinghies and the big keel boats, states Daniel Kohl of Bavaria Yachts. And now already 100 boats have been sold. 'It is great to see, that we could gain a whole new set of sailors with the B/one.'

On the second race day, World Champion from 2012 André Budzien (Schwerin), pushed himself in the OK ahead of Greg Wilcox from New Zealand, who is currently residing in Germany.

The second best nation at the international part of the Kiel Week are the Danish. Soeren Dulong Andreasen in the Contender, Steffen Stegger in the H-Boat and Per Buch in the Folkboat are all in top positions.

Four further nations can flirt with the idea of gaining Kiel Week Gold. France has two strings to its bow in the youth classes: Sebastien Simon/Pierre Rhimbault in the 420 and Lucas Rual/Emile Amoros in the 29er. Norwegian Lars Johan Brodtkorb is sailing in the Europe without a spot. He crossed the finish line first five times in five races already. With Karolis Janulionis in the Laser Radial as well as Denis Khashina/Dmitry Mechetin in the Star, Lithuania and Ukraine are also in the top positions of their classes.
