The decisive day at Sail the Gulf 2016 dawned and sailors were yet again ready for an epic finale. It was a last chance to demonstrate their skills in what promised to be a thrilling day of competition, although the weather wouldn't cooperate and brought light winds to the area.

In the Optimist Class Muhamed Rani of Malaysia dominated throughout the competition and was the man to catch. The difficult, light conditions saw him finish 4th in the day's only race but that was still ahead of his nearest rivals and enough to crown him champion.

There was no change at the top of the Laser 4.7 leader board. Asmawi Asman struggled in the light winds but the Malaysian's fifth place finish was enough to hold onto top spot.

The Laser 4.7 title went to Asri Azman, the overnight leader from Malaysia to claim the country's third crown of the regatta. There was a good third place finish for Qatar thanks to Faris Al Bakri.

Qatar claimed another podium finish in the Laser Standard fleet thanks to Waleed Al Sharshani who's consistency helped him finish second overall.

Malaysian Kairuniman Afendy had already claimed the title yesterday and sat out today's light airs.

A golden clean sweep was denied Malaysia by the British pair in the Hobie cats. Simon Keams and Oliver Richardson claimed the title having won 6 of the 10 races. Hasan Al Baker and Mohamed Ismail of Qatar came a commendable fourth overall.

Sail the Gulf wrapped up with a typically impressive and glamorous Medal and Closing Ceremony, showcasing a real flavor of Qatari hospitality. Alongside racing, the sailors have enjoyed the opportunity to discover some of the unique heritage and culture of Qatar, and you can be sure many have already committed to return for Sail the Gulf 2017.
