In his presentation, the Vancouver Maritime Museum Executive Director, Dr. Joost Schokkenbroek, will discuss the museum's position, the current activities, as well as the challenging ambitions for the near future.
Some of the leading questions in his presentation and potentially subsequent discussion include: how can these future ambitions materialize? What factors are instrumental in creating this better and larger museum? And how do these ambitions relate to the current (or maybe even future) cultural landscape?
Dr. Joost Schokkenbroek holds a PhD in maritime history from Leiden University, The Netherlands. He began his museum career in 1988 at the Kendall Whaling Museum in Sharon, Massachusetts, USA. Between 1991-2017, Dr. Schokkenbroek has been affiliated with Het Scheepvaartmuseum (The Dutch National Maritime Museum) in Amsterdam as Chief Curator, and as Professor of Maritime History and Maritime Heritage at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Since July 2017, Dr. Schokkenbroek is acting as Executive Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum in Canada. In September 2018, he was appointed Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.
Dr. Schokkenbroek has published on whaling history, the admiralty in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch East and West India Companies, maritime art and artifacts, and on the maritime history between the Netherlands and the Baltic. Also, he has published on artifacts, museum collections and material culture in general and their importance as sources for historical research.
